History of World Food Day;
The member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) founded World Food Day at its 20th General Conference in November 1979. And World Food Day was first celebrated on October 16, 1981.
The idea was proposed by Dr. Pal Romany- former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food. The UN General Assembly, on December 5, 1980, officially accepted and urged governments and international, national, and local organizations to participate in the commemoration of World Food Day.
Since 1981, World Food Day has been celebrated every year around the world. So far, the day has been celebrated by more than 150 nations across the globe to raise awareness about the issues related to poverty and Hunger.
Significance of World Food Day;
Even though the globe generates enough food to feed everyone, one in nine people experiences chronic Hunger. At least two billion people don’t have regular access to adequate amounts of safe, healthy, and nutritious food.
Approximately 70% of the world’s extremely poor live in rural areas. Most of them rely on agriculture. Each year, Hunger kills more people than malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS combined. Around 45 percent of infant deaths are related to undernutrition.
The food is either spoiled during production or transport or thrown into the dust bins of households, retailers, or restaurants. Hence, World Food Day provides us, the government, and organizations, to take bold action to fix this so that everyone has enough safe and nutritious food to consume.
How to Celebrate this Day?
World Food Day is observed by almost 150 countries. The day is sponsored by 450 national organizations in the US. Many of these organizations organize Sunday dinners in honor of World Food Day. Ministries, universities, and research organizations host conferences, exhibits, and media broadcasts all around Europe.
There are various types of events that take place on World Food Day; this includes everything from concerts and contests to cultural performances, exhibitions, hunger marches, and marathons.
Moreover, the best thing you can do on this day is to give some food to people who need it the most. And, if you figured out the nearest food bank to you, try to donate food or money because most food banks will accept food or money. You could also volunteer at food banks on this day.
