World Contraception Day is an annual campaign that takes place on September 26 every year. It is celebrated to generate awareness across the globe about available contraceptive options. Also, encourages young people to make responsible decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
In order to exercise their right to choose whether or not to become pregnant, the number and spacing of their children, and to enjoy safe and enjoyable sexual experiences without the risk of unexpected pregnancies, women and adolescent girls can use contraceptives.
Contraception refers to any method, medicine, sexual practices, surgical procedures, or device used to prevent pregnancy. The most common forms of artificial Contraception are condoms and pills. Women can choose various different methods to prevent pregnancy. Some work better than others at preventing pregnancy.
History of World Contraception Day;
On September 26, 2007, Ten International Family Planning Organisations celebrated the first World Contraception Day to increase contraceptive knowledge among young people and to raise awareness about the importance of family planning and birth control or Contraception so that every pregnancy is desired.
The ten organizations are the Asian Pacific Council on Contraception, Centro Latinoamericano Salud y Mujer, the European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health, and the German Foundation for World Population.
International Federation of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, International Planned Parenthood Federation, Marie Stopes International, Population Services International, The Population Council, The USAID, Women Deliver.
All couples and people have their rights; they are independent and independent to choose the number and spacing of their kids. It was stated during the International Conference on Population and Development that took place in 1994.
It is also embodied in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development within goal 3.7. Now, 15 international NGOs, governmental organizations, and scientific and medical societies are supporting World Contraception Day.
Significance of World Contraception Day;
In developing nations such as Peru, the Philippines, Romania, etc., approximately 255 million women wish to plan their pregnancies but lack access to modern contraceptive techniques. Increased maternal mortality, which is the leading cause of death for women who are of reproductive age, is caused by this preventable risk.
The two greatest threats to women’s sexual and reproductive health are HIV (Human immunodeficiency viruses) and undesired pregnancy. Women living in areas with high rates of HIV lack access to contraceptive methods.
Awareness or proper knowledge of modern contraceptive techniques can help women and couples make informed choices that help enhance women’s and society’s well-being.
That’s why World Contraception Day has been established to spread awareness about contraceptive methods and their importance. Also, this day encourages young people to make responsible decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
