Thakur Roshan Singh was a great revolutionary and freedom fighter of India. He sacrificed everything close to his heart like other freedom fighters to free India from British Raj.

Childhood and Early life of Thakur Roshan Singh

Thakur was born on January 22, 1892, to Kaushalya Devi and Jangi Singh in the village of Nabada in Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. His family was very supportive of him. He was an excellent wrestler and sharpshooter.

From a very young age, his family encouraged and empowered him to fight for the country’s freedom. With his parent’s blessings, Thakur fought very hard to free India from the grip of the British colonizers.

Revolutionary Activities of Thakur

The Indian National Congress Volunteer Corps was forbidden by the authorities from engaging in nationalist activities during Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-1921). This decision of the government made all Indians angry, they protested against it.

One such group of angry volunteers led by Thakur Roshan Singh was sent from Shahjahanpur district to the Bareilly region. The police opened fire on the group to stop the parade. In this incident, many protestors along with Thakur were taken into custody.

He was given a two-year jail term in the Bareilly Central Jail after a complaint was filed against him. His jailer at Bareilly treated him incredibly harshly. He was so outraged by the brutal treatment that he vowed to exact revenge on those who had wronged him.

Soon after his release from jail, he went to Ram Prasad Bismil to start his revolutionary works again. Bismil immediately hired him and assigned him the duty of instructing the newcomers in the shooting.

In 1924, Thakur joined the HSRA (Hindustan Socialist Republican Association), a group that also included Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Nath Lahiri, and Ramprasad Bismil of Shahjahanpur.

In the Bamrauli Dacoity incident, when he was challenged by a village wrestler, Thakur Roshan Singh shot the man dead single-handedly. He soon came to the attention of Britishers. His audacity and endless courage were becoming a threat to Britishers.

The fear of Thakur was so much among Britishers that they apprehended him just after the Kakori incident. Even though, he was not involved in the Kakori Conspiracy.

How Did Thakur Roshan Singh Die?

Thakur was allegedly given a five-year prison term after the verdict was announced. Another story claims that Roshan Singh was mistakenly detained for the railway heist at Kakori because he resembled another revolutionary, Keshav Chakraborty, who was implicated in the Kakori event.

Even though Roshan Sigh attempted to persuade the judge and clear up the situation, the judge disregarded all of his justifications and sentenced him, along with Rajendra Nath Lahiri, Ashfaqulla Khan, and Ramprasad Bismil, to death.

The whole nation became furious with the decision of the court and protested against the death penalty but in vain.

The British government was afraid of these daring revolutionaries, so they planned to hang Ramprasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Thakur Roshan Singh, and Rajendra Nath Lahiri on December 19, 1927, in separate locations in Gorakhpur, Allahabad, and Gonda to be sure none of them escaped.

In order to avoid a backlash, the authorities went one step further and hanged Lahiri two days ahead of schedule on December 17, 1927, in the Gonda district jail. On December 19, 1927, Thakur Roshan Singh was eventually executed in the Malaka/Naini Jail of the Allahabad district.

It is commonly known that after his passing, his family experienced social and financial hardship, including difficulty matching up his daughters for marriage.
