World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) is an annual event, it is observed on the 15th of July each year. History of World Youth Skills Day
The first World Youth Skills Day was held on July 15, 2015, and the theme was “Youth skills for work and life in the post-2015 agenda”. On 18 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) approved a resolution that proclaimed July 15th World Youth Skills Day.
Sri Lanka sponsored this resolution, with the support of the G77 & China, to highlight at a global level, the importance of youth skills development. And, the main motive of the day is to achieve better socio-economic conditions for the youth of today in aspects of challenges of unemployment and under-employment.
Importance of World Youth Skills Day
Around the world in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, youth employment reduced by 8.7%. More than 1 in 6 young people are out of work or unable to work because their employers closed or lost business due to the pandemic. Only skilled people have worked and made money in this tough situation.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated July 15th as World Youth Skills Day. The day is celebrated to educate youth about technical and vocational education training, and the development of other skills relevant to both local and global economies.
World Youth Skills Day 2022 Theme:
Every year, the world youth skills day holiday is celebrated with a certain theme launched by the United Nations. For the 2022 year, the theme is “Learning and skills for life, work, and sustainable development”.
How World Youth Skills Day is Celebrated?
Every year on this day, several youth events are held at United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City and all over the world. They conduct various events and competitions including photography, essay writing, and many other skill-based competitions.
But you can also celebrate this holiday by starting a new course based on skill, doing a tonne of hard work on your old skills to make them better, and spreading awareness of the significance of vocational training as well.
