Updated September 23, 2022

Each year, World Physical Therapy Day is celebrated on 8 September worldwide to highlight the crucial contribution of physical therapists in dealing with chronic pain and keeping people well and fit. Also, this day is celebrated to generate awareness about the importance of the Physical therapist’s profession in societies.

This day allows us to recognize the physiotherapists’ work they do for their patients and nations. And how they motivate their patients to stay fit, independent, and live a healthy life. Physical therapists attempt to treat an injury and educate people about the exercise that can heal the damaged tissues.

History of World Physical Therapy Day

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT), present-day known as World Physiotherapy, created World Physical Therapy Day on September 8 of every year in 1996. Seventy years ago, on September 8, 1951, a community was created named World Confederation for Physical Therapy; that’s why September 8 was chosen to celebrate world therapy day.

When we talk about the history of Therapy, let us know that the earliest documented actual physical Therapy comes from the old master of medicine- Hippocrates. He began the concept of manual manipulation for pain treatment in 460 B.C. Since then, physiotherapy has evolved from a simple massage to a complicated portfolio of therapies.

Significance of World Physical Therapy Day

Physiotherapists have always played a vital role in servicing others around the world. They have contributed selflessly to keeping people well and fit. Physical Therapy also allows patients to avoid having surgery in the first place and contributes to allowing more of our aging people to retain their movement abilities and independence.

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy designated 8 September as World Physical Therapy Day to honor and highlight their work and generate awareness among the youth about the importance of physical therapists for individuals, communities, and nations.
